Crowdsourced Fuel Price Feature Launches in UK

We are happy to announce that Waze's cheap fuel price locator is now officially available in the United Kingdom!

The feature, which enables drivers to find the cheapest petrol stations along or near their route, can now be accessed on any smartphone within the United Kingdom.

The feature allows drivers to update real-time fuel prices at local stations and navigate to the cheapest petrol station along their route. Users searching for fuel can view nearby stations color-coded by cost (see below). In fact, users in the UK have already contributed more than 4,000 fuel price updates at petrol stations across the country.

Our UK map-editing community, including Darren McConachie (aka dmcconachie) and Tim Rigden (aka Timbones), provided us with a detailed list of more than 7,000 of the 8,700 country's petrol stations, expediting the release of the feature there.

The petrol station feature is entirely dependent on crowdsourced information. The more petrol stations our editors add, the faster the feature will be made available in each country.

What are your thoughts on Waze's real time fuel prices?

  2. this is for android 3.2.2.2? I can neither navigate to a "gas" station in the uk nor can I view the prices. They just show as regular blue square POIs rather than stations on the map.

  3. barry, set a route then add a stopover via the categories, the first category in the list should be Fuel Stations (or Gas stations if you haven't changed to UK English in the app settings.

Then you should see the "Update Fuel Prices" in the Report tab (lower right button) where "Pave" used to be!

  4. Great idea -- bad name in the UK. We call it Petrol

  5. It is referred to as "fuel" in the app in the UK (assuming you've switched your language in the app settings to UK English). It's only on this global Blog post that "Gas" remains!

  6. But if there's an issue, for example you don't have GPS on, it says "Can't find nearby gas stations". But you know what? I don't care! If people in the USA produce a free app and want to use the word gas instead of petrol, good luck to them. :) And thanks for a great app.

  9. Hi Waze

Here's a purchasable list of all German Gas Stations last updated in June of this year.
It's not for free, but shouldn't be causing a dent in your budget ;)
Maybe that way we can speed up the feature integration.

  11. So If I give you a detailed list of the "Service Stations" in Australia, will you add them too?

  12. Hi Dormant,

Depends on the source of the list and whether or not the information is free-rights or open-source. If it is based on publicly-released data, then sure! Send it over :)

    Thanks,
    Edon

  14. Fuel is a fair name - there are a lot of diesel cars out there, and commercial traffic is mostly diesel.

Regarding the number of fuel stations - I've added three to the map... which is s start, I suppose.

There are certainly more, but nowhere near as many as there used to be before the supermarkets started selling it.

  15. Are the prices for petrol or diesel though? Can see it gettting confusing/misleading if one person updates price for petrol price and another to the diesel price.

  16. @ puffletrump

There are four prices that are reported and available for updating - unleaded, super unleaded, diesel and LPG.

As a user of premium diesel, I was disappointed that wasn't reported and updateable, but there's room for only four prices, but as low price diesel usually means low price premium diesel, I can live with that.

  17. Nearly one year later , i'm still seeing it referred to as Gas!

And a question, how do I change the search default to Diesel, selecting station and then viewing info is faff!

Scratch all that, changed language from english to english (UK) and it all changed, and added a petrol stations option, still, why is there no (US) next to the default english option!?
