Community Spotlight: South Africa Prepares For Mega Map Raid

Community Spotlight takes a behind-the-scenes look at the at the contributions made by local communities and map editors on Waze. The community is made up of volunteers with a shared vision working together for the common good. We’ve got to hand it to our budding South African community. A few months ago, they unlocked fuel prices by mapping over 80% of the country’s gas stations. Now, they have their sights set on mapping the entire country’s speed limits in order to gain access to the coveted feature. It’s not an easy task, but we think they’re up for the challenge. To help map the speed limits, the community organized a Mega Map Raid that is taking place from April 30th until May 8th. Map Raids are time-limited hackathons that focus on improving a specific area of the map. While Map Raids are normally exclusive to local editors, Mega Map Raids are an international effort.
To help out-of-towners become familiar with mapping editing in South Africa, the community created this amazing Wiki page for the upcoming Map Raid. The country has been divided by province, and every editor has been assigned an area to work on.
The Wiki page also contains helpful tips about typical speed limits, road signs and mapping conventions unique to the country. Since this Map Raid is focussed on speed limits, there is also a section that deals with road signs that could be easily confused with speed limit signs.
The Map Raid has already begun, but it’s not too late to join the fun! If you’d like to contribute to the effort, you can do so by signing up here: If you'd like to sign up for our next Indian Map Raid, you can do so here
Good luck South Africa! We’re confident that you’ll have speed limits unlocked soon!
